I have been to around 12 tournaments so far. Recently I was sponsored by Electronic Boutique.
The trick is to always come prepared. People watch you play matches, they see what pokemon you have, they know what cards you have. The trick is to bring several decks. It confuses people because they design a deck to beat you and instead get stuck with an entirely different deck.
Another trick is to not have too many type of one pokemon. I used to have a whole deck with all fighting pokemon until people caught on and used pokemon with resistance to fighting pokemon.
My last and final tip for the year is this. Always do decks with backup plans. Make combinations that can save each other. An example is this: You start off a match real good, getting an Onix and Ryhorn. Everything is going well until the opponent rips out a Squirtle and Staryu. It would most likely be over for you. Your Ryhorn really gets hammered leaving only 20 hp left. The next round your opponent evolves his Staryu into a Starmie. With a startle you start to laugh. Your opponent looks shocked. It's not possible to have 5 cards left in your hand. You smile as you fill your bench with magnemite, Pikachu, and smile as he cannot see your remaining Raichu.
The point of this was that your Rock Pokemon did not work. However since they were not good against water your Electic Pokemon were able to turn the match around. Now had your opponent had all Rock Pokemon your Electric Pokemon would be no good against them. However your Rock Pokemon wouldn't be exactly weak against them either.
Other good combos are: Fire and Water, Electric and Rock, Electric and Water, Normal and Psychic, Fire and Grass, and Grass and Water.
